Training
On Sunday 8 March 2009 The Nautilos Search and Rescue Team in Cooperation with Komanetsi performed a Rescue Exercise as part of its ongoing training and also an extension of our DAN Training exercises.
The event was started by three groups of Scuba divers diving at three different locations.A team of people on the shores scattered all over Gavo Greco started their coastal walk to try and find people in need of support from the shore.Two dive boats were available in the sea for the rescue.At one point two scuba divers emerged from the water releasing an environmentally safe solvent into the water to show their location and inform people in the vicinity of their distress.Once the ground support team saw the divers, a radio call was made to the boat captain explaining their exact location and flares were fired into the sky.Smoke flares were also lit on the shore.Once the boat reached the two victims, the surface divers dove into the sea and started the swim for the divers.They were safely removed from the sea and helped into the boats.First aid was given to the divers and ground support team leader was informed of the successful recue.
Before the team could relax another call was received for another two divers on the other side of the cove.Again flares were fired and lit and the bit went off to find the divers in distress.Simultaneously the ground support team radioed in another distress call of 4 divers off the shore.One was still submerged underwater.The surface support team started swimming from the shore to reach the distressed divers in time.The one diver under water was assisted to the surface and all for divers were towed to the shore.First aid was administered and oxygen to those who required it.
On the overall it was a successful day. Everyone was safe and the experience made us all stronger.
Exercises like these are necessary in order to be prepared for the real thing.The knowledge of the correct procedures and the usage of the correct rescue equipment proved to be vital for the success of this exercise.With DAN rescue equipment and first aid kits the rescuers job is simplified and the success of saving lives.
The Nautilos Search and Rescue Team is a Volunteer based Nonprofit and Non government organization dedicated to assisting people in need of assistance from accidents at sea.In cooperation with DAN we offer our members training on safety and rescue procedures.We also take the time to educate the public on safety procedures and practices to avoid accidents at sea.The objective is never to need us, but know that when you do, we do everything to get you out safely.
